For over 50 years the Victorian Anaesthetic Group has provided high quality anaesthetic services to patients throughout the greater Melbourne area. All our Anaesthetists are Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and highly experienced in their field. Our anaesthetists cover all surgical specialities including cardiothoracic, neuro and paediatric surgery. The majority of our Anaesthetists hold VMO positions at teaching hospitals in Melbourne in addition to their private practice.

Originally from Sydney, Dr. Vanessa Andean pursued her training in Anaesthesia in Melbourne. She now works in a mixture of private and public practice and is a Visiting Anaesthetist at the Austin Hospital. Dr. Andean has been involved in medical aid projects in Africa and South America, and she has also worked in France.

Background
Alex is originally from New Zealand and finished his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Otago. He moved to Australia in 2000 and completed his anaesthesia training in NSW, the UK and at the Alfred and St Vincent’s Hospitals in Melbourne. After working as a consultant at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand, Alex accepted a position at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 2013, where he continues to work. He joined the Victorian Anaesthetic Group at the same time and works in private practice throughout Melbourne. Alex is heavily involved with teaching trainee anaesthetists and preparing them for ANZCA examinations. He participates fully in the ANZCA continuing professional development programme.

Kim has a particular interest in anaesthesia for obstetrics, neurosurgery, trauma and burns. Her regular work also includes anaesthesia for lower limb orthopaedic, dental, pain and endoscopic procedures.

Background
After completing her undergraduate training at Monash University, Kim completed her anaesthetic training at the Alfred Hospital. She also undertook training at the Royal Women's and Royal Children's Hospitals. She continues to work at The Alfred as a Visiting Medical Officer where she anaesthetises patients for a great variety of often complex procedures in unwell patients. Her fellowship year was undertaken at both Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and The Alfred, where she held the role of Principle Fellow. Kim's time at Peter MacCallum allowed her to sub-specialise in perioperative management of patients with cancer. In addition to her clinical training, Kim has also completed a short course in perioperative medicine, was awarded a scholarship for Women in Leadership Australia and has undertaken teaching of difficult airway management.

Other Interests
When not working, Kim spends much of her time with her three small children. She enjoys photography, long distance running and skiing. She and her family regularly travel to rural Victoria and France.

Background
Dr Carden is a Specialist Anaesthetist who graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1985. After her residency she trained as an Anaesthetist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1988-1991 including sub specialist rotations through the Royal Women’s Hospital, Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. In 1992 she worked as a Fellow in Anaesthesia in London, England. From 1993 -2008 Dr Carden worked at Monash Medical Centre as a Specialist Anaesthetist.

Other Interests
Dr Carden is a volunteer with the Vietnam Vision Project - a group of volunteers who perform cateract surgery for the poor in Vietnam. She travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia in 2008, 2009 and 2011. In her leisure time she plays golf!

Background
Dr Effeney is a consultant anaesthetist with special interests in anaesthesia for major general and orthopaedic surgery, as well as difficult airway management, regional anaesthesia, and obstetric anaesthesia. Dr Effeney works as a visiting specialist at The Alfred Hospital, and previously worked in the same role at The Women's Hospital. He is regularly involved in anaesthetic registrar teaching, and has been involved in protocol design and equipment selection for difficult airway management at The Women's Hospital. Dr Effeney has spoken on the subject of difficult airway management at major educational meetings. Dr Effeney has been a board member of the Victorian Anaesthetic Group for the last five years, and completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course in 2016.

Dr Effeney is happily married and has two young daughters. He is a keen cyclist, and supporter of the Melbourne Rebels rugby team (Think 'Richmond Supporter' and you'll get the idea).

Background
I was born and raised in Melbourne and studied Medicine at Monash University. At the conclusion of my anaesthesia training I spent two and a half years at Stanford University in California, where I developed my interest in Patient Safety and in the emerging field of simulation in healthcare. On my return to Australia in the mid-90s, I became a staff anaesthetist at Monash Medical Centre, where I helped establish one of the first healthcare simulation facilities in the southern hemisphere. Using principles developed in the aviation industry, the centre provides critical incident training for anaesthetists as well as resuscitation training for other healthcare professionals. I worked at the centre from 1997-2010, and for part of this time I was also Associate Professor of Patient Safety Education at Monash University. Since 2011 I have been a Visiting Anaesthetist at the Alfred Hospital. I have been working in private practice since mid-2013. I am married with three young children.

Ben completed his training predominately at The Alfred Hospital and completed fellowships at The Royal Children’s Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He then spent a year at the Oxford University Hospital in the United Kingdom training in orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia, ENT and difficult airway anaesthesia. Background
Following completion of my medical degree at the University of Melbourne, I received my specialist qualification from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. I work at the Alfred Hospital in Prahran, a major trauma hospital, regularly caring for extremely unwell and complicated patients. I also work at the Royal Women's Hospital in Parkville, specialising in obstetric and gynaecological anaesthesia. I have attained further qualifications in the use of ultrasound in anaesthesia, completing a post graduate certificate in preoperative ultrasound at the University of Melbourne. I am a regular participant in the Maintenance of Professional Standards Program from the College of Anaesthetists.

I am a graduate of Monash University and completed my post graduate training through the Alfred and St Vincent’s hospitals in Melbourne. I have particular interest in regional anaesthesia and the management of acute pain and of the shared and difficult airway. I am the Vice President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and a board member of the Victorian Anaesthetic Group. I am a former member of the medical advisory committee of Invivo medical indemnity and of the medical advisory committees of Vimy Private Hospital and Surrey Private Hospital. I am involved at the Epworth and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals in the development of tools to help with the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing major surgery.

I have a broad general anaesthesia practice with specialty interests in anaesthesia for trauma and burns, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and neurosurgery. In addition to clinical anaesthesia, I’m a retrieval consultant and coordinator for Adult Retrieval Victoria – the statewide critical care retrieval service for Victoria. We use various transport platforms including helicopters, airplanes and road ambulances to transport critically unwell patients from around the state to higher levels of care as safely as possible. I also write regularly for MJA InSight and am completing postgraduate studies in journalism at RMIT.

Background
After completing my basic medical degree at Monash University and my initial hospital medical officer years at the Western Hospital, I trained in anaesthesia at the Alfred, where I continue to work as a visiting anaesthetist. I’ve completed sub-specialty fellowships in retrieval medicine, with CareFlight Queensland and in paediatric anaesthesia at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, which included 6 months as a senior registrar in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. I’ve served in the Australian Army reserve since 2007 and was promoted to Major in 2015. I deployed as a medical officer to Afghanistan in 2010 and to Iraq in 2015 as the anaesthetist for Task Group Taji. In 2013, I was the ASA Pacific Fellow in Suva, Fiji, where I was fortunate to teach local anaesthesia trainees as they prepared for their final exams. I remain involved in the selection of future candidates for this fellowship and I am passionate about improving access to safe and essential surgery in our region. I am an active instructor on the Australian and New Zealand Burns Association’s, Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) course and I have taught burns management in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

After early childhood on a sheep station, I then had a nomadic existence, attending several excellent government schools, before gaining a scholarship to Mentone Boys Grammar School. From there, I gained entry to Monash University, graduating in Medicine to become a resident and then anaesthetic registrar at the Alfred Hospital. My third year of specialist training was in the UK, after which I returned to complete my final year at the Royal Womens Hospital and the Royal Childrens Hospital. Soon after completion of training, I was invited to join the Victorian Anaesthetic Group and at the same time took an appointment as a visiting anaesthetist at the Alfred Hospital. In the years since graduating, I have served as State Chairman of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, lectured to candidates in training at the College courses, and sat on advisory committees at some hospitals I attend. A particular interest has been the difficult problem of nausea and vomiting associated with anaesthesia, and I have given a number of lectures on the topic.

I am the fifth generation of as family that settled in Kyneton in the 1840s and still have very strong ties to this lovely rural area. I was educated locally at Kyneton State Primary and Secondary High Schools until Year 9 when I won a boarding scholarship to Scotch College for the final 4 years of my secondary schooling. I attended Monash University completing my Medical Degree in the minimum time of 6 years in 1979. My initial general post graduate training was at Box Hill Hospital for 3 years with 5 years of further advanced specialist training overseas. Time was spent in London and Somerset(UK) for 2 years, in Vught(Netherlands) for 1 year and finally 2 years in Edinburgh(Scotland). I completed the last 2 years of my Anaesthetic training at the Royal Melbourne and Dandenong Hospitals respectively in 1988 and 1989. In 1990 I joined Whitehorse Anaesthetic Group and transferred to Victorian Anaesthetic Group in 2002 having just completed my 2 year term as Victorian State Chairman of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. During this time I was party to direct negotiations regarding the formulation of Federal and State Parliamentary pieces of health legislation including Informed Financial Consent, Gapcover arrangements and the licensing of Day Surgery Centres. Between 1995 and 2010 I have organised close to 100 anaesthetic meetings ranging from hospital to regional to rural to State to National to International meetings, the largest of which was the 62nd Australian Society of Anaesthetists Combined International Scientific Congress for which I was the convenor in 2003. Presently I hold the position of Director of Anaesthetics at 2 private hospitals and one endoscopy/day surgery centre and consider patient safety paramount.

Following some time overseas, I was accepted into the graduate entry medical program at Flinders University in South Australia and moved to Adelaide to complete the degree, spending some time in Alice Springs in the process. I returned to Melbourne for internship, and after 3 years working at Western Health and in Emergency & Trauma Medicine, was accepted into anaesthetic training at the Alfred Hospital. I completed a year-long paediatric anaesthetic fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital to round out my anaesthesia training, including a term in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

I regularly anaesthetise for a wide range of surgical specialties. My interests are in anaesthesia for trauma, obesity surgery, ENT, ophthalmic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, colorectal surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, obstetrics and management of the difficult airway.

Background
Following completion of my undergraduate medical degree at Monash University, I completed anaesthetic training at The Alfred Hospital. I continue to work at Alfred Health and Eastern Health as a Specialist Anaesthetist. I maintain my professional knowledge and skill by participation in the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Continuing Professional Development program. I also completed further postgraduate study and training in Perioperative Medicine and the use of ultrasound in focused cardiac ultrasound.

Other Interests
I enjoy travelling, spending time with my family and dog, cycling, food and wine.

I can understand if you feel some anxiety about the anaesthetic for your forthcoming procedure. I will be happy to answer any questions you have when I meet you before the operation. Please be reassured that due to the extensive training of Australian anaesthetists in anaesthesia, pain control, resuscitation, intensive care and managing medical emergencies, there is no safer place in the world to have an anaesthetic than in Australia. Following completion of a medical degree at Monash University in 1983 and 7 years in hospital training positions in Melbourne, I received my specialist qualification from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1991. I then worked for 3 years in clinical and research positions in Boston (Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School) and San Francisco (Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Anaesthesia, University of California San Francisco) in the United States. Presently I am a Visiting Senior Anaesthetist at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne and hold appointments at multiple private hospitals in Melbourne. I am a regular participant in the Maintenance of Professional Standards Program from the College of Anaesthetists, and have recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Perioperative and Critical Care Echocardiography at the University of Melbourne. I have published 10 research articles in international journals on ultrasound monitoring of the heart. My aim is for you to experience as little pain and discomfort as possible after the procedure. Background
Dr Vincent Tan graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2001 and trained as a specialist anaesthetist at the Austin Hospital, becoming a Fellow of Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2009. He currently works as a visiting specialist anaesthetist at the Austin Hospital and Dandenong Hospital, as well as in private practice at a number of private hospitals in Melbourne. He is an active participant in the continuing professional development program by the ANZCA college. Through continuous self-education and training, he is able to provide his patients with high quality and safe anaesthesia.

Background
Following completion of my medical degree at Monash University, I worked at Monash Medical Centre from 1993 until 1997 where I trained as a general physician. In 1998 I transferred to the Alfred hospital where I combined anaesthetic and general medical training. I received my specialist qualifications from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2002. I worked as a full time specialist anaesthetist at the Alfred for 5 years with a special interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, trauma and peri-operative medicine. I continue to work there regularly as a visiting anaesthetist. In 2007, I entered private practice and joined the Victorian Anaesthetic Group. I am a regular participant in the Maintenance of Professional Standards Program from the College of Anaesthetists. Background
Mark graduated from Monash University Medical School in 1984 and began his Anaesthetic training in 1988. After working in London, Sydney and Melbourne he achieved his Fellowship of the Australian College of Anaesthetists at the start of 1994. He joined the Victorian Anaesthetic Group in 2009 after 16 years of private and public practice in Ballarat which included 12 years on the Intensive Care roster. Current clinical practice involves anaesthesia for orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ENT(including paediatric), urology, oro-facial, colorectal and upper gastrointestinal surgery. Speciality interests include the application of ultrasound and echo techniques to anaesthetic practice and he is a member of the Melbourne University, Ultrasound Education Group. Over the years Mark has also had extensive experience in anaesthesia for vascular and thoracic surgery, opthalmology, gynaecology and obstetrics.

In addition to providing anaesthesia for a wide variety of surgical specialties, I have a special interest and ongoing involvement in anaesthetic care for medically complex patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, major orthopaedic surgery, bariatric surgery and emergency surgery, both in public and private sectors. I am also a researcher and teacher of ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia techniques, which improve patient comfort after surgery and reduce the requirement for other forms of pain killers.

Background
I was born in Japan and grew up in Hong Kong before coming to Australia. Following completion of my undergraduate medical degree at the University of Melbourne, I completed anaesthetic training at Monash Health and St. Vincent's Hospital. I did further training at Toronto General Hospital to specialise in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Currently I am a staff anaesthetist at St. Vincent's Hospital. My professional standard is maintained by full commitment to clinical work, research, teaching and attending conferences both nationally and internationally.

I did my medical degree in Germany but all of my anaesthetic training in the UK and Australia. I worked as a full time specialist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital for seven years with a special interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. I entered full time private practice and joined the Victorian Anaesthetic Group in 2008. I thoroughly enjoy the huge range of work that I am involved in and enjoy being a part of the team at most of the private hospitals across Melbourne.
