Patient Information
Prior to Surgery
To enable minimal risk and maximum recovery for your surgery, you should attempt to undertake the following:
- Cease smoking - ideally 6 weeks before your planned surgery
- Limit your alcohol intake
- Stay as fit as possible
- Cease any herbal products you are taking - ideally 2-3 weeks prior to your planned surgery
To ensure your anaesthetic is as safe as possible you should also:
- Continue to take any prescribed medications
- Remember to tell your surgeon and anaesthetist of all prescribed medications/vitamin supplements that you are taking. (You might prefer to have a written list of medication names and dosages to take with you when you visit your surgeon rather than try and remember all of your medications, and you should bring all of your medications in to hospital with you)
- If you have diabetes and are on insulin you should speak with your surgeon, GP, endocrinologist or anaesthetist for dosage whilst fasting. If you take tablets for your diabetes please check with your surgeon or anaesthetist if you should take your usual medication on the morning of surgery.
- If you take medication to "thin your blood", you should check with your surgeon as to whether you should cease taking your medication prior to surgery.
- Remember to tell your surgeon and anaesthetist of any health related issues
- Inform your anaesthetist of your smoking history and alcohol intake
- If you take recreational drugs it is important that you inform your anaesthetist as they may interact with the anaesthetic you are to have
